What is Bible journaling?
Bible journaling is simply engaging, diving into and reading Scripture in a personal way. Literally that’s it!
You aren’t just reading your Bible. You’re diving into it. You’re probably saying “Megan, what the heck does that even mean?!”
Bible Journaling can look like this…
writing notes in the margins
highlighting verses that speak to you
drawing, doodling, or painting
praying through what you read
reflecting on how it applies to your life
underlining powerful words that stand out to you
tear soaked pages
Really truly, at its core, Bible journaling is about slowing down and letting God’s Word sink deeper into your heart.
Bible journaling is about making time to meet God where you are- messy, tired, distracted, and still deeply loved by Him.
Let’s get started on your faith journey
I’m sure you’ve had these questions swirling around in your mind
Is it ok to write in your Bible?
How do you choose the right Bible?
What supplies do you need to get started?
Do I need to be creative?
Can I journal with others?
What if I’m not sure what to write?
Can I do it digitally?
Let’s tackle these questions one by one.
Are you supposed to write or “color” in your Bible?
Girl…. it’s YOUR Bible and if that brings you closer to God then HECK to the YES! That is the ultimate goal, right? To draw nearer to our creator. To build a bond so strong. To love Him so deeply.
How do you choose the right journaling Bible?
If you don’t already have a bible, I recommend getting one that has wide margins specifically for journaling. Here’s the journal bible I use and I LOVE it.
I went with a simple lined design but there are SO MANY choices out there.
As for selecting the right Bible version. You’ll find this article helpful.
What supplies do I need to get started on my faith journaling path?
Really that’s up to you on they type of journaling you want to do. But here are some basic supplies to get you started with your faith centered note-taking.
notebooks (I like the top spiral bound)
Do I need to be creative?
Girl, no you don’t need an ounce of artistic talent to start on your Bible journaling journey. Remember, the focus is about being perfect. God doesn’t want you to be perfect. He wants you to be present, even if that means taking simple notes while you are in His word.
Can I journal with others?
Yes! It really just depends on what you are wanting out of your faith journey. Bible journaling with others can
encourage accountability
build community
enrich understanding
But also, if you want to keep it more personal and private that’s ok too!
What if I’m unsure what to write?
If you aren’t sure what to write when diving into the Bible not to worry. There are several different methods you can use that will help guide you on your path. Here are a few. You can dive deeper into these methods HERE.
VERSE MAPPING- study one verse, reflect, & illustrate

While I’ve never used any of these a quick Google search suggested these Bible Journaling apps:
Key take aways
If you take nothing else away from this my prayer for you is that you just start. If you can’t tell I didn’t grow up in a church. I didn’t grow up in Scripture. It took me crumbling to pieces after my divorce that I gave it all to our Savior and really NEEDED to know Him. Not just pray when I needed Him, but truly to know him. I just opened my Bible. I didn’t know the books in the Bible. I didn’t have scripture memorized. I just dove in, tears soaking my eyes most days. I kept going. I still have a long way to go but everyday I’m in HIS WORD is a day I am closer to Him.
A Prayer for the Momma who needs guidance with her path in Bible journaling
Lord,
First and foremost, we thank you for everything, Lord. We lift up to you the momma reading this today. May you guide her eyes, her hands, and most importantly her heart as she embarks on this deeper level of connection to you. We pray that Bible journaling builds that connection with You that she has been needing and craving.
We pray all of this in your beautiful and precious name, Lord, Amen.
